Katherine Aungier (b. 1983, Portland, OR) is a dynamic multimedia artist and curator. Her work thrives at the intersection of individual creation and collaborative engagement. Her expansive artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture, sound, installation, writing, and performance, all deeply rooted in drawing. Aungier's approach is characterized by a spirit of care, a playful yet critical engagement with systems, and a profound commitment to collaboration. This investigative ethos is vividly demonstrated in her current research on Manzanar—the first documented World War II Japanese-American internment camp on Turtle Island (North America). Here, she focuses on the community press and the influential contributions of artist and activist Isamu Noguchi.

As a curator, Aungier extends this inquiry by developing exhibitions that explore spatial identities, often partnering with artists in unconventional settings. Her projects, including "Untitled," a video installation that features looped bird sounds captured by a motion-activated camera, and "The Ringer Irreconcilable," an installation created with Tarik Garrett that uses carpet and audio to explore themes of safety and precariousness, showcase her innovative approach. Through her past involvement with spaces like Regina Rex and Harbor Gallery, Aungier has consistently championed emerging artists. She sees curating as a powerful means to construct narratives through space and interaction, a vision built upon collaborative exchange with fellow artists and thinkers.

Furthering this commitment, Katherine co-facilitates SOCIETY, a new art space that fosters experimentation and vibrant dialogue. This space is a testament to Aungier's dedication to creating a dynamic community of artists and thinkers where experimentation and dialogue are encouraged and celebrated.

This residency program is made possible through the support of The Ford Family Foundation, Visual Arts Program, and partnerships with Yucca Valley Material Lab and Venice Arts.
